....we let the blade fall twice….

....she must’ve lost her sanity, I was drumming on my tray…

....I’ll be found at the base of the canyon….torn from the wreck of the motor…

I promised myself that I would keep this to only ten.  I ALMOST succeeded…  I’ve always found thirteen to be lucky anyway.  By the way, this isn’t a ranking; it’s more of a chronology.

Yes I grew up sweet ‘til I fell from the tree.  Things have gotten bad; take one look at me

She ring rattled in a randy way when she woke me one morning on a Saturday and a chain fell round my head bells, baubles and pearls

Your mind is like a spaceship that the angels might fly

The eyes I once believed were swimming pools now she flaps and blinks like leather wings

Motorists around me, may well fear for their lives but when a man’s beside himself it’s awful hard to drive

Then we were rising - above the rain.  Little drops of ruby jingled on her chain

You try to pool all the people that you could fool when you drank from the most attractive drains

And on the land there were vines and beetles; crawling on the works of men.  And then the sky was bright, there was a ripple on the surface and Descender lost touch again.

I might need to be going – away.  I might need to be staying – away.  This is the move I like.  This is the move I always try.

And I don’t care what you do there.  I know you have to take positions with your friends.  And all the deep conversations.  I know the story; I begin to see the end.  And you don’t need a Troublemaker…

Is it a bad situation if I never have to change my ways?

Weekday mornings she would leave for work - to be the second secretary to a postal clerk

We were rusty from the start.  There were scratches in the groove.  I never understood my part.  Never made the proper move.

Oh,  yeah. That’s a great one, Kara. I can feel that song just reading it.

Here’s the beginning of a list for me, just Trip:

“When you lay your hand down on my side/and they eyes that thrill me lay down in mine/ then I’m open to the whims of a beautiful child”

“Stare at aqua makeup til you lose your mind.”

“Understand that the chains are magical/ and they strain to keep you where you are.”

“She gave me green planets and worlds/to hang around my head like pearls.”

“She became the blood mattress/flesh crib of my baby.”

“Under the snakey moon.”

Reading all these lyrics reminds me of so many other favorites.  What a great thread!

I definitely consider myself one lucky fellow that Matt followed his path to music and his music tumbled across my path oh so many years ago!

Robbie and ss, you hit on many of my favorites.  This might be a good excuse to roll through all the records this coming weekend, though. There are so many gems in there.  I have a similar experience listening to a Matt Wilson song that I do when I’m listening to some of the great classic songwriters—Paul Simon (where to begin?), Lou Reed (I never get over the brilliance of how he sets the scene for “New York” with those opening lines “Caught between the twisted stars/ the plotted lines/ the faulty map /that brought Columbus to New York.”  One of my favorite theme setting openers.), Joni Mitchell (“snow gathers like bolts of lace/dancing on a ball room girl” comes to mind).  New things continually jump out at me.

Robbie, “We were rusty from the start/there were scratches in the groove” is the line that immediately jumped out at me from the new record.  And ss, that “she was the blood mattress/flesh crib of my baby” has always haunted me.  Such a visceral metaphor.  “I’m not rich but I play the drums/that’s pretty much me….some drummers have shakey times…” has always struck me as quintessentially Matt.  Humility, vulnerability, empathy, truth.  I even love the corny pun.

My BW&B faves:

“If I ever played with the strings of your mind, you should see me searching for the ground now.”

“Half of the song I stole from a stranger/ half of the song I made for myself.”

“Four young weasels did the work of two” and some days, in particular:  “I’m alive every minute I’m away from you”

“She is kind and she is cold.”

Boy, what I wouldn’t give to hear “Travel Plans” live…

I’m still partial to lines from the original, rocking classic.  They still make me laugh as I recall the yard work of my youth.

I was walking by the window with a spinning blade.  I was staring at the lady making lemonade.  Walking by the window I was barely dressed.  I was hoping she would ask me in to be her guest.

But I totally grew to love the BW&B “corrupt” version (or whatever it was called).

Sir, if it’s all the same to you.  If it would be alright for now.  Can you let me cry.

Actually, this thread is a bit tortuous, it probably would have been WAY simpler to quote any Matt lyrics that I DON’T like

Actually, that is a truly great lyric.  I love the intro lines as well.

This look is new.  She stands there different to.  She doesn’t want to come inside.  She’s got a long, long ride.  She waves her hands; explains her travel plans.  I can only hear the rain.  The slowly rising plane…

And how could I forget the beautiful simplicity of ‘Hello Caller’.  What an amazing ending to an album.  It would have been nice to have a Forum back then to gush happiness over the sounds of BW&B.

Then like a dream, the little speaker said, “I just know you’re lying there, in your bed”

I’m so sorry and so far from home.  Be true and leave your name upon my phone.
Hello Caller.  I’m away from home.  Be true and leave your name upon my phone…

Right on!  It appears that Kara is rocking out today to some Trip and BW&B!

But no further quotes from Stereo Night or Love Monsters.  She must have grown tired of Matt’s earliest and latest drivel…  grin
