I have to admit at the outset that I was at work this morning and just didn’t have it in me to wade through Minnesota’s great get together and see the set live. So, this is what I heard on the Current:
Mark Wheat was “really, really, really thrilled” to have TTH close out the Current’s broadcasts from the fair. John reported that the band is working on a new record and that they’d be trying out untested songs during the set. He said it in public—a record is in the works. He said he hopes it is ready for the holidays and that they’ll be recording the new songs “for the first time” THIS MONTH. He also said he’s been through the process enough to know that his hopes for the holidays may be dashed and that songs on the last record went through up to four recordings….
John laid out the bait for us (men) regarding Friday’s show. “Umbrellas of Cherbourg features a young Catherine Deneuve guys…”
There was mention that the Last Word might be added to the TTH site at some time.
3 songs in the set. Dave and Steve were not present.
1. “Help Me Find the Way.” This has been played before at least once. Can’t remember where. “I remember growing up and believing the world was made for peace and not guns…” This is still a work in progress, but it’s a good one.
2. “Maybe.” Not the cover, but the Matt Wilson original. This was countrified, with slide guitar—or Jacques’s magical version of slide guitar mimicry. It is ready to go. Sounded brilliant. A really nice build up to call and response between Matt and John at the end. “Maybe, maybe, maybe I don’t want to know.” “Maybe, maybe, maybe we don’t want to know.” This one is going to be a favorite on the new record/tour.
3. “Queen of Tomorrow.” Had to keep the troops happy. Spike’s hypothesis was not broached, but I think the last round of Current interviews pretty well settled the matter. Chalk one up, sir. The silence must be taken as capitulation!
Can’t wait for the show on Friday. Maybe we’ll even have the steam to stick around for Ms. Deneuve. And hope some of the crew made the fair. How’d it all look?
