Liner Notes

Matt

With the dust settling down a bit around Twilight Hours country, now feels like a good time to say a few words about the songs on Stereo Night. In the past I’ve worried that I might ruin someone’s pleasure in my music by revealing too much about the feelings and events leading up to the making of a song. But during the long minivan vacation from which my family and I just returned, I found myself cherishing the liner notes from a Gordon Lightfoot compilation CD as I imposed hit after hit on my trussed and immobilized children.

The essay I was reading was the kind commissioned by a record company from a freelance writer in LA. You can just tell. But still, I just drank in the words about Gordo and his memories of the music. A few of his comments really did ruin – or maybe just change – the power of a song or two. But on the whole, I felt like my connection to the work got stronger. And on my favorite songs, to know their maker better just made me love them more.

So here, spread out over 10 posts, are some liner notes for the 10 songs on the new album. God knows John could write a parallel set from his own perspective. But here are mine. I hope that knowing more will make the music more powerful for you.

Yay!

The sounds coming to me through my ipod are glorious and the second trio of songs are really just stunning…

...that Gordon Lightfoot song always gets to me….still….that line, “I don’t know where we went wrong, but the feeling’s gone and I just can’t get it back”...just chokes me up…

Yeah, that’s what I need, make the music more powerful for me.

You had me at “shit was jacked”.

Before you go further, I’ve always had a theory about “Queen of Tomorrow”, not sure I’m ready go have that dispelled. Maybe we should start a thread bout such things.

With more power behind the music, I may be able to fly…bring it on!

In all seriousness Matt, I think that you are really very brave to reveal your notes behind your songs, although I can glean quite a lot from the record anyway…still, this will be a treat…
